Ringworld by Parasky Ringworld by Parasky
Though the year is no longer used as a unit of measurement, historians estimate that it is approximately the year AD 16522. This Torus, also known as a ring world, is a large man-made structure that is abundant in farms and is entirely self sufficient. This particular one has a population of around 2.6 billion beings, with humans being the majority composing 92% of the population. The planet it orbits is called Silicius and is home to 4.9 billion beings, with Agites being the majority, composing 62% of the population. Following the Agites are the humans, who compose 33% of the remaing population.

the sunlight must be very strange. Have you read the Ring-World novels by Larry Niven?

His Ringworld was created by stripping material from an entire solar system, and the ring itself orbited the sun.

and for night/day, he had giant plates miles above the Ring

Different ring planet concept. This is one which orbits a planet, and the Day/night cycle comes from the orientation of the ring and it's spinning. Look at the ring planets from the game "Halo" If you need a visual.
